Mechanism
Cholecalciferol is hydroxylated in the liver to 25(OH)D3, then in the kidneys to calcitriol — the biologically active form. Calcitriol regulates intestinal calcium and phosphate absorption, modulates immune gene expression, and is essential for bone mineralisation. Adequate serum 25(OH)D levels are the marker most clinicians use to assess Vitamin D status.
Why Lichen, not lanolin
Most D3 supplements are extracted from lanolin — the wax from sheep wool. It works, but it isn't vegetarian, and many wellness-conscious consumers don't realise their 'plant-friendly' supplement contains an animal byproduct. Lichen is a photosynthetic organism that naturally produces Cholecalciferol when exposed to UV light — exactly the same way human skin does. Mechanism
MK7 activates two critical Vitamin K-dependent proteins through gamma-carboxylation: osteocalcin (which binds calcium into bone matrix) and Matrix Gla Protein (which inhibits calcium deposition in arteries and soft tissues). Without sufficient K2, these proteins remain inactive — meaning calcium absorbed via D3 lacks the routing signals to reach bone.
Why MK7, not MK4 or K1
K1 (from leafy greens) is poorly converted to active K2 in most people. MK4 — the synthetic short-chain form — has a plasma half-life of just 1–2 hours, so daily activity drops off quickly. MK7 (long-chain, typically from fermented natto) has a half-life of approximately 72 hours, providing sustained K-dependent protein activation throughout the day from a single daily dose. What's the difference between D3 and D2 — and why does NutriPeak use D3?
Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) is the form your skin naturally produces when exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol) is plant-derived but less effective at raising and maintaining serum 25(OH)D levels.
Studies consistently show D3 is more efficient at correcting deficiency. NutriPeak uses D3 for that reason — and we source it from Lichen so it stays fully vegetarian.
Why pair D3 with K2? Can't I just take D3 alone?
D3 increases your gut's ability to absorb calcium. But once that calcium is in your bloodstream, it needs K2 (specifically MK7) to direct it where it belongs.
K2 activates two key proteins: osteocalcin, which binds calcium into bone, and Matrix Gla Protein, which helps prevent calcium from depositing in arteries and soft tissue. Taking D3 alone increases calcium absorption without the routing system to direct it. Together, they make biological sense.
How much D3 and K2 does each capsule contain?
Each capsule delivers 600 IU (15 mcg) of Vitamin D3 from Lichen — exactly 100% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for Indian adults — and 55 mcg of Menaquinone-7 (MK7).
The doses are intentional. We didn't go higher just to claim a bigger number — at 600 IU paired with full MK7, the formula matches what published research uses.
Is the D3 actually vegetarian? What is Lichen?
Yes — 100% vegetarian. Lichen is a photosynthetic organism (a symbiosis of fungi and algae, not an animal) that naturally produces Vitamin D3 when exposed to UV light. The metabolic pathway is essentially the same one your skin uses.
The Cholecalciferol extracted is chemically identical to D3 from any other source — including lanolin (sheep wool), which is what most commercial D3 supplements use. The difference is the source, not the molecule.
Why MK7 and not MK4?
Both are forms of K2, but they behave very differently in the body.
MK4 has a plasma half-life of just 1–2 hours — meaning K2 activity drops sharply between doses unless you take it multiple times a day.
MK7 has a plasma half-life of approximately 72 hours. One daily capsule maintains consistent K-dependent protein activation around the clock. For sustained calcium routing and bone support, MK7 is the form with the strongest evidence.
What are the other ingredients, and is the product allergen-safe?
The other ingredients are: Diluent INS 341(ii), Glidant INS 553(ii), Preservative INS 211, and HPMC INS 464 (the vegetarian capsule shell). The product is sugar free, gluten free, GMO free.
Allergen note: manufactured in a facility that also processes Milk, Soya, and Nuts. If you have a severe allergy to any of these, please consult your physician before use.
When is the best time to take the capsule?
Take 1 capsule with your largest meal of the day — typically lunch or dinner.
Both D3 and K2 are fat-soluble, meaning they absorb significantly better when there's some dietary fat in the meal (ghee, nuts, dairy, oily fish, avocado, oils). Taking them on an empty stomach or with a fat-free snack reduces absorption substantially.
Can I take more than 1 capsule a day for faster results?
No. The recommended dose is 1 capsule daily. D3 and K2 are both fat-soluble vitamins, which means they accumulate in body tissue over time — taking more than directed can lead to excess accumulation rather than faster results.
If you have a clinically diagnosed deficiency and your doctor has prescribed a higher dose for a defined period, follow their guidance. Otherwise, one capsule a day, every day.
How long should I take this, and how do I know if it's working?
A minimum 90-day cycle is recommended for measurable change. Vitamin D status shifts slowly — most people see meaningful improvement in serum 25(OH)D levels after 8–12 weeks of consistent daily use.
The cleanest way to know it's working: get a baseline 25(OH)D blood test before starting, then retest after 90 days. The number should rise. Many people continue long-term, especially through low-sun winter months.

Is it safe if I'm on blood thinners like Warfarin?
Speak to your physician before starting. Vitamin K2 (MK7) participates in the same biological pathway that Warfarin and other Vitamin K antagonist anticoagulants are designed to interrupt — meaning K2 supplementation can affect your INR (clotting time) and the dosing of your medication.
This doesn't necessarily mean you can't take K2 — but it must be coordinated with your prescribing doctor, who may want to monitor INR more closely or adjust your anticoagulant dose.
Is this safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Vitamin D is important during pregnancy and lactation, but any supplement should be reviewed by your gynaecologist or physician first. We don't recommend self-medication during pregnancy or nursing — your doctor knows your full medical context, current medications, and any other supplements you're taking.
